Day 5: Labor Day in Spain

Today is a holiday (día de fiesta) in Spain. It's the day that all of the workers take the day off, similar to our Labor Day. Even though most of the city was closed for the holiday, we still had class.

Lunch: Sopa puree
Soup made with pureed vegetables

Lunch: Lomo de cerdo con pimientos.
Pork with grilled peppers... This was so good! The peppers they use are red but
when they are cooked they are yummy and a little bit sweet.

Lunch: Fresas con nata.
Fresh strawberries and cream. :)

Our Spanish family. Marisa and Jesús in their kitchen.
Jesús is a barber in a small city 30 minutes from Salamanca and is normally gone during the day.
He was home for the holiday and was able to eat with us during lunch.

Our activity today was watching a movie, so we were done a little bit early. Since it is a holiday, we took the liberty of exploring. We found a little store that is open 24 hours, including holidays. It was one of the only supermarkets open. We looked around the store and bought some interesting snacks...

I thought these were funny... Paprika flavored Lay's.

We bought these but haven't tried them yet.
The one on the left is ham and cheese flavored.
The one on the right is 'countryside' flavored with tomatoes and onion. ;)

They had a great selection of chocolates. I'm sure you can tell which ones
I picked out and which ones Rodd picked out?
The bottom one is made with corn... just like corn nuts covered in chocolate.
I was so intrigued that I had to try it. It's very different, but still good.
(Rodd may not agree... ;)

Churreria.
A churro stand near our school and house.
We ate the most delicious churros... Churros con crema y churros con chocolate.

While we were walking around el Parke la a la Medilla, we saw some girls playing a game and stopped to ask how to play it. It's like Spain's version of tag! It was so funny to watch. We took a video of the girls playing it and they even explain how they play in the video.

Video of Juega de Salamanca.
Basically, you go around the circle and everyone takes a turn trying to hit
someone's hand.If it's not your turn, you can't move your feet.
When both hands have been hit, you are out.

Dinner: Tortilla francesa, patata con queso y jamon, y tomates con sal.
French tortilla (like an omlette), Potatoes with cheese and ham (like a hash brown),
and fresh tomatoes with salt.
